The complexity and variety of our work

Murray:
Hi everyone, my name’s Murray.

Kofi:
Hi everyone, I'm Kofi.

Murray:
We're here today to talk a little bit about the work that we do here at Berkeley Partnership and why Kofi and I decided to join. So to kick things off, Kofi, tell me about the variety of roles you've had at Berkeley so far.

Kofi:
The key thing that brought me to Berkeley was the opportunity for greater variety. With that, I had to step into areas that I was not naturally flexed in. So, new functions, new industries, new skills. In addition, stepping into these different roles required me to work very closely with my clients’ leadership teams. In part because of this, my professional, as well as my personal, growth have really benefited from joining Berkeley.

Murray:
Yeah, a lot of that resonates with me as well. When I joined, I started out early on a three-month assessment of a large transformation program for a global advertising and media client. That's not an industry I'd worked in before. But very quickly, I realised that my experience in transformation and solving large complex problems was relevant for our client, so I was able to add value while also learning a new industry. The complexity of the role and the challenge really increased from there for me. Whereby, once we closed the three-month assessment, I then started to take on more of a delivery role. And now, I actually lead the delivery of the first release of that transformation. And really, I'm looking forward to a long relationship with that client and in that industry. It's really checked all the boxes that I was looking for when I made that transition, so I've really enjoyed it so far.

Kofi:
It's great to catch up, Murray.

Murray:
You too, Kofi.

Our partners by your side

Your learning and development as a consultant is supported by your Personal Development Partner and Listening Partners. Unlike other firms, we have a low consultant-to-partner ratio of 4:1. This means you’ll have much more access to partners compared with more traditional consulting firms. It also ensures you have quality time with your partner, learning from their experience and working with them to help shape the firm.

Championing your development

Your Personal Development Partner will help you develop and succeed, as they share their considerable knowledge. When it comes to career development for consultants, you won’t find cascaded objectives or targets here. Instead, you’ll meet your Development Partner every six months to check in on your personal development. You may want to explore partnership or develop a long-term career as a consultant. We only promote partners from within Berkeley, so if your goal is to make partner, we’ll support you to get there.

You may also choose to move on in the future. We have a strong history of helping our consultants move into industry roles and we’re proud of our Alumni’s achievements after leaving us. We can support you to explore your choices and with our considerable network, we can assist you in finding the right role.

Your Personal Development Partner is also your advocate for new assignments. Each week, partners will meet to explore upcoming assignments and hand-match consultants to each project. Your Personal Development Partner will represent your interests and help you get assignments which match your goals and stretch your development.

Coaching is a way of life

We are a coaching organization and we have been for over 30 years. Our partners are qualified coaches and provide our consultants with the space to think, talk about career development and focus on making real progress. In fact, coaching is such a strong part of our culture, that we don’t just coach our consultants, we offer coaching to our clients too.

Always there to listen

Listening is a key aspect of how we work and what makes Berkeley different. You will have a Listening Partner to support you as you work through each assignment. You’ll meet weekly and they’ll provide as much support as needed, whether this is helping you to work through a solution, sharing their own experience, offering feedback or simply being there to listen. This support can be as hands-on or hands-off as you need and means that you can develop deep trusted relationships with the partners.
